Get Organised – How To Prepare Your Morning Routine To Avoid Being Overwhelmed

Having a morning routine as a professional working mum is essential, and many of us end up barrelling into a series of tasks without having time to think about what is happening next. Early on after having our first son I remember the feeling of dread as the alarm sounded next to the bed, feeling like I had no control on the events that were about to unfold that day.

Are you waking up happy or are you reluctant to get out of bed? This could be a sign that you need help.

Sometimes the best move to make is to not keep moving with the flow, but to create your own path. This requires as little as 10 minutes of your time the night before, or if you can manage it, put aside even more time.

Are you having arguments in the morning?

Creating a routine can significantly reduce the feeling of meaningless meandering, and many of us undervalue the importance of a good start to the day. A good start sets the mood not just for yourself, but for your family. A good start can eliminate friction in your marriage, and change the mood of your children for the day.

Getting organised to take on the world!

Controversial Clinical Psychologist Dr Jordan Peterson says, “If we put ourselves in order, perhaps we will do the same for the world Jordan Peterson. The more people sort themselves out, the more responsibility they will take for the world around them and the more problems they will solve. If we put ourselves in order, perhaps we will do the same for the world.”

This principle is also true of every household, if we put ourselves in order, we can tackle the desperate feeling of lostness and begin making changes around us that begin with our inner person and then extend beyond that to our families, and then our work.

The essential elements in a morning routine:

As a working mum in Australia, it can feel like you have a million things to do and not enough time to do it all. Having a morning routine is essential to help you get through your day feeling energised, organised and ready to take on the world. Here are the 10 essential elements of a successful morning routine that all professional working mums should incorporate into their lives:

1. Make Time For Exercise:

Exercise is key to your health and wellbeing, so make sure you start your day with a little sweat session. Whether it’s a quick yoga session or a run around the block, make sure you’re getting your body moving and your blood pumping. I like to meet with a group of women each morning to connect and exercise together.

2. Eat a Healthy Breakfast:

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so make sure you’re giving your body the nourishment it needs to get through the day. Try to include protein and complex carbohydrates for sustained energy throughout the day.

3. Take Time for Self Care:

Make sure you’re setting aside time to do something for yourself. It can be as simple as sitting down in peace with a cup or tea or coffee in the morning and just enjoying the morning air.

4. Spend Time with Family:

If possible, try to set aside some time to spend with your family in the morning. This could be a few minutes after breakfast or just before you leave for work. It will help you feel connected and give you a sense of balance and stability.

5. Make a To-Do List:

Take a few minutes to make a to-do list for the day. Having a list of tasks can help you to stay focused and organised and make sure that you’re making the most of your time.

6. Be Mindful:

Mindfulness can help to calm your mind and reduce stress. Take a few minutes in the morning to sit and focus on your breath, or practise a guided meditation.

7. Connect with Other Working Mums:

Connecting with other working mums can be a great way to get support and advice. Whether it’s a working mums’ network or an online forum, connecting with like-minded women can help make the juggle of work and family life a little easier. If you drive to work, give someone a call on the way there, and have a quick chat.

8. Get Outdoors:

Fresh air and sunshine can do wonders for your mental wellbeing. If possible, try to make time to get outside in the morning, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Sunshine activates our body’s waking mechanisms so this is quite important.

9. Schedule Time for Fun:

Make sure you’re scheduling time for fun and relaxation later in the day. Having something that impacts you positively planned for your own enjoyment changes your mood throughout the day.

10. Set A Positive Intent:

To end your morning routine, take a few moments to set a positive intention for the day. This might be a decision not to argue, or to bring improvement in some way to yourself or those around you.

If you are having a hard time implementing any of these steps, just take one each day, and try to improve from the day before. If you aren’t seeing any improvement or changes in your moods, reach out to someone, because morning mood might be the indication of more serious circumstances in your life.
